Water Heater Replacement:
It can be tricky but is not generally a difficult job. To remove your old gas or electric water heater you will need to be sure the gas or electricity is turned off. If it is a gas water heater be sure to check that the pilot light is off. Then disconnect the gas line at the heater and cap it, now you can separate the vent pipe from the draft hood. If it is an electric water heater remove the cover plate where the wires go into the unit. You should use a voltmeter or a tester to be sure the circuit is not live. If there is any indication of a live wire DO NOT PROCEED…only proceed once all wires are dead. Remove the screws and cover plate. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve and place the other end of the hose to a safe place for discharging hot water. Next you need to turn off the cold water inlet and open a hot water tap to allow the air to enter (that way the water can drain out the other end of the garden hose. Disconnect any water piping from the heater and remove the old tank.
Installation of your new gas or electric water heater:
Place your new water heater for easy hook up of the piping…if it is a gas heater be sure the heater is located for easy alignment of the vent piping. There will be unmistakeable signs if your water heater is malfunctioning.
